What Does a Ford Extended Warranty Cover?

Authorized by Ford Motor Company, Ford Protect Extended Service Plans (ESPs) are Ford’s extended warranty plans that you can purchase from the car dealership. All four plans offer at least partial coverage of major engine components, as well as gaskets, seals, and internal parts. These Ford extended warranty plans include:

  • PremiumCARE—As the most comprehensive Ford extended warranty, this plan offers full coverage for the engine, transmission, brakes, air conditioning, heating, electrical, high-tech, audio, safety components, and more. Ford Protect PremiumCARE is the only plan to cover the powertrain control module (PCM) and more than 1,000 other components. This is the closest you can get to your original Ford warranty coverage.
  • ExtraCARE—This plan covers 113 components, including partial coverage for the engine, transmission, front- and rear-wheel drive, front suspension, air conditioning and heating, high-tech, and electrical components. It fully covers steering and braking systems. Ford ExtraCARE warranty coverage does not include the rear suspension, emissions, audio, safety, or PCM.
  • BaseCARE—Covering 84 components, this Ford extended warranty plan is meant to cover the powertrain and other essentials, such as steering, brakes, front suspension, air conditioning and heating, and electrical. While some engine components are included, BaseCARE does not cover the radiator, radiator fan, fuel tank and lines, flywheel ring gear, or gas fuel injectors and fuel lines.
  • PowertrainCARE—This plan is your basic powertrain warranty and includes partial coverage for the engine, transmission, rear-wheel drive, and front-wheel drive—a total of 29 components.

What to Know: Ford Extended Service Plans

A three-year or 36,000-mile Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty come with new Ford vehicles. Once these Ford warranties expire, you’re responsible for paying for any repairs—unless you opt for extended vehicle protection. You have the choice of purchasing coverage from the Ford dealership or looking to a third-party auto warranty company. How do you know which provider is best?

When you research Ford extended warranties online, you’ll be told that the Ford dealership has you covered from the tires to the body to the windshield. But consider this:

  • The PremiumCARE Ford extended warranty policy covers thousands of components and guarantees genuine Ford replacement parts and factory-trained technicians for service. But how long will you be covered? Ford’s policies last a maximum of eight years or 150,000 miles. Similar plans from CARCHEX last up to 10 years. If you purchase a Ford Protect ESP on a new Ford still under warranty, your extended coverage begins on the original in-service date. That means the longest you’re covered under a Ford extended warranty is six years or 75,000 miles.
  • Ford manufacturer extended warranties don’t include items that wear over time, such as tires, brake pads, and windshield wipers. They also don’t cover routine maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations. You need to pay for these on your own or purchase a separate maintenance plan from your local Ford dealership (called a Ford Protect Premium Maintenance Plan).
  • Ford also has separate protection plans for tires (TireCARE), dents (DentCARE), and windshields (WindshieldCARE), so keep in mind that these items aren’t included in your Ford ESP warranty.
  • Ford extended warranty plans keep you locked into Ford-specific mechanics. Do you want the flexibility to take your car to be fixed wherever you want? Ford’s warranties only allow you to access Ford dealerships.
  • When you purchase a Ford extended warranty from the dealership, the cost is often wrapped into your auto loan. That means you’re paying interest on your warranty, too.
  • Not every Ford extended warranty plan is authorized by the Ford Motor Company’s official warranty brand, Ford Protect. Extended Vehicle Protection Plans by CARCHEX are different from Ford Protect extended warranties and don’t bind you to the dealership.

Ford Extended Warranty Prices

Wondering how much a Ford extended warranty costs? Ford extended coverage from the manufacturer comes with different levels of service at escalating prices. The more coverage you get, the more expensive your plan will be.

Be sure to read all of the fine print so you’re clear on each plan’s covered components—and what you’re paying for and when. In addition to your monthly payment, you’ll pay a deductible per repair visit. Deductible options are a standard $0, $50, $100, or $200 disappearing.

Can You Afford These Common Ford Repairs?

When you purchase a Ford—or any vehicle, for that matter—it’s important to know what repairs are common for your make and model and how much you can expect to pay.

  • A Ford Explorer costs an annual average of $732 to repair, according to RepairPal.
  • RepairPal estimates you can expect to pay about $1,295 a year to maintain and repair a Ford F-350 Super Duty.
  • According to RepairPal, the average maintenance cost for a Ford Fusion is $581.
  • RepairPal data states it could cost you an average of $495 a year to maintain a Ford E-350 Club Wagon.
  • On average, it costs $600 to repair a Ford Escape, according to RepairPal.
Car Issue Fix Cost
Ford V8 F-150 Spark plug ejection from the cylinder head Cylinder head gasket replacement $1,400–$1,500
Ford Escape Ignition misfire Ignition coil replacement $107–$114
Ford Focus Worn motor mounts cause vibration Motor mount replacement $183–$199
Ford Mustang Corrosion on the hood Hood replacement $1,700 average

Are these repairs out of your budget? A Ford extended warranty can easily be worth it by helping to offset the costs.

Third-Party Extended Warranty Advantages

All car manufacturers try to keep purchases, repairs, extended warranties, and used car sales in-house. But a third-party extended warranty, such as CARCHEX, offers comparable coverage for your Ford and comes with several advantages over Ford Protect plans.

By getting a Ford extended warranty from a third-party company, you’re now able to take your car to thousands of licensed mechanics, not just under the Ford umbrella. With CARCHEX, choose from over 30,000 certified repair facilities, including national chains, independent shops, and dealerships. That makes it easier for you to find a convenient, trustworthy auto shop and get back on the road.

Also, repairs at the dealership are known for being more expensive. According to research from Car Talk, repairs performed at the dealership are 15% more expensive than when done at an independent shop. The ability to choose your own auto shop and mechanic can save you time and money.

Longer Coverage

A Ford extended warranty can cover you for up to eight years, depending on the level of coverage you buy. Buying from a third-party company can keep you protected longer. In fact, CARCHEX plans run up to 10 years, even for cars that have 100,000 miles or more.

Best Price

Ford extended warranty pricing is standardized and doesn’t consider the warranty market to find the best price for you. Third-party providers are incentivized to find great deals to save you money. At CARCHEX, we promise a No-Haggle, Low-Price, Everyday Guarantee™, so you can get the fair price that you deserve. What’s more, the cost of an extended warranty won’t be included in your auto loan, so you won’t have to pay additional interest.
