Odometer Checks
One major problem that is difficult to discover on your own with used
cars is odometer issues. Some sellers will intentionally tamper with
the odometer in an attempt to make the car appear as though it has fewer
miles on it than it actually does. You may think you are getting a great
deal by purchasing a used car with low mileage, but if the previous owner
rolled back the odometer then you will actually wind up purchasing a
car with many more miles on it than you initially thought – and
with more miles can come more problems. In some cases, the odometer problems
are not necessarily a case of the previous owner attempting to defraud
a buyer, but rather is a result of the odometer not functioning correctly.
Older cars without digital odometers can only record a certain number
of miles before they roll over and start anew, and even electronic odometers
have a tendency to malfunction occasionally. Unless the seller reveals
this and keeps an accurate record of the true mileage, however, you may
never know the actual mileage on the car. Odometer problems are one of
the main reasons why potential buyers should consider purchasing used
auto reports before making a final decision. A used auto report will
present a more accurate portrayal of the number of miles on a used car,
and this is important information to have before making a purchase.
