Car Navigation Systems

There's nothing more frustrating than having to stop while on a car trip numerous times and re-check a map. And, there's nothing more scary than being lost in an area that is not familiar to you. That's why car navigation systems have become a popular car accessory. These systems automatically compute the quickest and shortest route to your destination and give you that information while you are driving. Some models even recalculate a new route for you if you accidentally deviate off your originally planned route. A relatively new product, some car manufacturers are offering these systems in certain cars as part of the sale.

Car navigation systems utilize what is known as Global Positioning System or GPS. This technology, developed by the military, relies on a series of earth-orbiting satellites. By calculating certain distances to these satellites, a GPS receiver can deduce its own location.

Some car navigation systems are built right into the dash of a car, while others mount under the seat or are hand-held products. To be safe, you should look for a navigation system that allows you to get and find directions without having to take your hands off the wheel while driving.

Car navigation systems can cost hundreds of dollars so you should shop carefully and determine how often you are likely to use such an expensive car accessory. Also, keep in mind that these products are new so the technology and features are still being perfected.
