Finding The Best New Car For Your Lifestyle
It's easy to begin dreaming of a new car when you see them all around you: on TV, in ads and passing you on the Interstate. Buying a car is an emotional decision and new car designers know that. Every year they come up with new looks and accessories to tug at your desires. Just as it's important to determine what you can pay for a new car before you begin your showroom search, it's also important to think about what type of new car you need. A new car might look exciting whizzing by you on the freeway, but is it what you need? Here are examples of basic types of new cars:
- Sedan: has two or four doors, a hard top and is often associated with luxury items, such as leather seats.
- Sport Utility Vehicle: has the features of both a minivan and a truck and makes it easy to haul both people and luggage. Can be taken off-road, if needed.
- Station Wagon: have become popular again recently. Possibly easier to handle than an SUV and offers the same extra space to haul items.
- Sub compact: a much smaller car that sometimes offers luxury features and a hatch-back trunk.
- Full size van: a truck-like vehicle with an open interior that can carry up to 15 people.
- Minivan: a popular vehicle among families with some of the advantages of both a full-size van and an SUV.
Here is the best way to determine which type of new car is right for you: Make a list of all the uses of your car, i.e. shopping excursions, vacations, weekly trips to the grocery store, recreation trips, car-pooling and work commuting. Then, figure out how frequently each type of trip occurs and what gear goes along with it.
That SUV might be nice, but would a less expensive minivan do the trick? A subcompact car price might be enticing, but will you struggle to fit everything for a weekend trip or sports event? A sedan might be a work of art, but does it have the trunk space you need? What about gas usage? How many miles will you typically drive in a week and what kind of mileage does your choice get?
Don't be tempted to buy a new car just because your neighbors are. Investigate the features of the new car you like, determine if it's safe and efficient for your usage and then narrow your search.
