Some Exemptions Apply To Importing A Car

If you decide to purchase a car overseas and have it imported, you will quickly learn that there is both a large degree of paperwork and specific and detailed laws that govern receiving the shipment of such a car. For example, some imported cars are subject to a gas-guzzler tax when shipped to the U.S. However, there are exemptions to some of these strict guidelines. Cars shipped to the U.S. by non-residents do not need to conform to emission or safety standards, but they cannot then be offered for sale in the U.S. Vehicles shipped to the U.S. from foreign countries for research, demonstration or competition may also be exempt as long as they are not driven on public roads.

Also, members of the military and civilian employees of the U.S. government who are returning at the end of an overseas assignment can ship certain types of vehicles to the U.S. without it costing them extra money in duty taxes.
