An extended car warranty is protection from the vehicle manufacturer against mechanical breakdowns. This term is sometimes incorrectly used to describe coverage from third-party providers, which offer similar protection plans called vehicle service contracts. CARCHEX is a vehicle service contract provider.

Hondas have a reputation for being among the most reliable cars on the road. In fact, many Honda owners drive their vehicles far beyond the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the car.

Even if your vehicle seems to be driving normally, it’s still very possible it will need repairs. No car is immune to the wear and tear of an everyday commute, which is why it’s important to have a Honda warranty. Once your 3-year/36,000-mile basic limited warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty expire, you’ll need additional protection.

Honda Warranty Coverage

Every new Honda comes with a factory warranty to ensure your vehicle is covered in the case of a manufacturer or workmanship error. Factory warranties are broken down into two components: the basic coverage warranty, often referred to as the bumper-to-bumper warranty, and the powertrain warranty.

The American Honda Motor Co. offers these two warranties along with several more. The breakdown of Honda’s warranty offering for its new vehicles is as follows.

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

If you’re purchasing a new Honda, you automatically receive a New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which covers many components, including the air conditioning unit, battery, audio system, and other electrical components. The coverage is good for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Additional limited coverage includes:

  • Key fob and remote batteries—6 months
  • Wiper blade inserts—6 months
  • Wheel balancing and wheel alignment—1 year or 12,000 miles
  • Air conditioner refrigerant—2 years or 24,000 miles

Limited Powertrain Warranty

The powertrain is your car’s powerhouse. The car’s powertrain system includes the following parts:

  • Engine
  • Transmission and transaxle
  • Drivetrain
  • Restraint system

Powertrain warranties cover everything involving the repair and replacement of these parts and other parts included in the powertrain. Honda’s warranty for your powertrain is good for either five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Honda’s Limited Powertrain Warranty protects the following:

Engine

Engine-related repairs include work on the cylinder block and head and all internal parts; timing gears and gaskets; timing chain/belt and cover; flywheel; valve covers; oil pan and oil pump; intake and exhaust manifolds; engine mounts; engine/powertrain control module; water pump; fuel pump; seals, and gaskets.

Transmission and Transaxle

Honda’s transmission and transaxle repairs include case and all internal parts; torque converter; transfer case and all internal parts; transmission/powertrain control module; seals, and gaskets.

Front-Wheel Drive System

Honda’s Limited Powertrain Warranty services the following components of the front-wheel drive system: final drive housing and all internal parts; driveshafts; constant velocity joints; front hubs and bearings; seals, and gaskets.

Rear-Wheel Drive System

Honda’s Rear-Wheel-Drive System coverage includes the differential housing and all internal parts; propeller shafts; universal joints; driveshafts; constant velocity joints; rear hubs and bearings; seals, and gaskets.

Accessory Limited Warranty

The Honda warranty offers three years or 36,000 miles of protection for Honda Genuine Accessories  installed at the time of the vehicle’s purchase. According to the warranty booklet, in addition to the accessories included in the purchase, Honda also grants warranties to accessories purchased through, but not installed by, Honda dealers.

All accessories included at the time of purchase are covered by either the time remaining in the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or one year, whichever is longer. Accessories purchased through a Honda dealer are also protected for one year.

Replacement Parts Limited Warranty

Honda provides coverage for its Honda Genuine Parts for one year from the date of purchase of the duration of the New Vehicle Warranty (three years or 36,000 miles), whichever is longer). The Replacement/Remanufactured Parts Limited Warranty only covers repair claims that include documented proof of purchase. It only covers parts considered to be normal maintenance items, like spark plugs, filters, and brake pads, if they are defective.

Rust Perforation Limited Warranty

Honda’s Rust Perforation Limited Warranty, or corrosion warranty, provides protection against rust and deterioration for original body panels. This Honda warranty is good for five years and unlimited miles. It does not protect against the rusting of body panels that were repaired, replaced, or refinished after the purchase of your vehicle.

Roadside Assistance

Honda offers 24-hour emergency roadside assistance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of your vehicle. Honda’s 24-hour emergency roadside assistance covers the following:

  • Jump-starting
  • Fuel delivery
  • Lockout assistance
  • Flat-tire changing
  • Mechanical towing
  • Accident towing
  • Winching

Tire Warranty

Coverage for your tires is separate from your Honda warranty—they’re covered by the tire manufacturer. Look online for your specific tire warranty from Yokohoma, Bridgestone/Firestone, Hankook, Maxxis, Continental, JK, Michelin, Goodyear/Dunlop, or Kenda.

Additional Coverage

Honda cars less than three years old with fewer than 36,000 miles are eligible for additional coverage with Honda Care® Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) Plans. If your Honda vehicle is less than one year old and has fewer than 12,000 miles, it is eligible for Honda Care Maintenance. These aftermarket warranties provide prepaid services, rental car reimbursements, and more.

What Your Honda Limited Warranty Doesn’t Cover

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover normal wear or deterioration of any part, cleaning and polishing, or adding any fluids, unless they are needed as part of a warranty repair. Unless broken, chipped, or scratched window glass is due to a defect in material or workmanship, it will not be covered. Cosmetic flaws, such as paint, that aren’t due to a defect in material or workmanship will also not be covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

In addition, the Honda warranty won’t cover damage or failure of parts or accessories due to:

  • Improper maintenance or installation
  • Abuse or misuse
  • Accidental damage
  • Low fluid levels
  • Racing
  • Modifications

Honda also won’t honor the warranty if the odometer has been altered or if the vehicle has been declared a total loss.

Extended Honda Coverage

While Honda’s warranty program sounds generous on the surface, it actually lags behind that of other manufacturers. For example, these car brands provide longer warranties than Honda:

Make

Limited Basic Warranty

Acura

4 years/50,000 miles

BMW

4 years/50,000 miles

Volkswagen

4 years/50,000 miles

Kia

5 years/60,000 miles

Mitsubishi

5 years/60,000 miles

The Kia and Mitsubishi limited powertrain warranties last up to 10 years or 100,000 milesalmost double what the Honda powertrain warranty offers.

Why Consider Extended Protection?

Extended coverage is a smart decision to give your vehicle—and wallet—the coverage it needs. It can protect you from the inevitable costly repairs your Honda will need as it gets into higher mileage territory, especially after its manufacturer warranty expires. When it comes to purchasing extended coverage, you have two options: an extended warranty from the manufacturer or dealership, or a third-party vehicle service contract company.

If you purchase a Honda extended warranty from the dealership, you are limited to its levels of protection, which give you fewer options in the long run. You’re also only able to take your vehicle to a Honda dealer for repairs.

There are fewer options when it comes to dealer extended warranty plans, so you may end up paying a high price for coverage that you don’t need. That’s where third-party vehicle service contract companies like CARCHEX come in. Learn how you can customize Honda protection plans from a third-party company for your driving habits and budget, so you get the policy you need for an affordable price.

Honda Reliability

When it comes to buying a vehicle service contract (or not buying one), there’s always a gamble. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to be sure you can pay for sudden unexpected repair costs out of pocket, should a mechanical breakdown happen. But if you have one, you’ll have to make consistent payments for a breakdown that may never happen, which is why it’s important to know how likely or unlikely your Honda is to need repairs in the future.

Honda vehicles are known for their reliability by consumers, but some industry studies indicate otherwise. In the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, for example, Honda landed in 19th place out of 29 total auto manufacturers, having encountered an average of 206 problems per 100 vehicles. This was slightly above the industry average of 190 problems per 100 vehicles.

So it’s very possible and likely that an older Honda will need repairs like any other car. Because of this, you might wonder how much money will a protection plan save you with your Honda? The answer isn’t easy. It depends on several factors, like the model and age of your Honda, and your driving habits.
