What Is a Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty?
A bumper-to-bumper warranty covers nearly everything from the front to the back of your vehicle, usually with the exception of cosmetic components, wear and tear items, and items damaged by neglect or extreme weather and driving habits.
There are two types of bumper-to-bumper warranties: stated component and exclusionary. A stated component warranty will list all of the covered components under the warranty. An exclusionary bumper-to-bumper warranty will list only those items that are not covered under the warranty. Therefore, you can assume that all other components are covered if they meet the qualifications of the warranty (such as non-wear-and-tear items).
What Is GMC Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage?
According to GMC, their comprehensive warranty covers parts and labor for original factory parts located between the front bumper and the back. This coverage extends for three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the date of purchase on new vehicles. Benefits of the manufacturer’s warranty include:
- No deductible
- Parts and labor coverage to correct defects in materials and workmanship
- Towing to a GMC dealership for service
- Transferable warranty to the new owner if conducted during the warranty period
Because powertrain components are also included in the bumper-to-bumper warranty, you will also receive coverage for 2500 and 3500 Series Heavy Duty (HD) pickups equipped with a 6.6L Duramax® Turbo Diesel Engine. This coverage lasts even longer at five years or 100,000 miles.
For GMC certified and pre-owned vehicles, the terms are different. Comprehensive coverage is covered for only a 12-month/12,000-mile limit.
These items are not covered under the GMC bumper-to-bumper warranty:
- Tire damage or wear
- Damage due to bedliners
- Damage due to accident, misuse, or alteration
- Collision, fire, theft, freezing, vandalism, riot, explosion, or objects striking the vehicle
- Misuse of the vehicle such as driving over curbs, overloading, racing, or other competition (proper vehicle use is discussed in the owner’s manual)
- Alteration or modification to the vehicle, including the body, chassis, or components
- All repairs if the odometer has been disconnected or altered
- Damage or corrosion due to environment, chemical treatments, and/or aftermarket products

What Is Covered Under the GMC Extended Limited Warranty?
The GMC Extended Limited Warranty is an optional bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers parts and labor on defective parts. This warranty can be added at the time of purchase of your new GMC vehicle so that you can extend the manufacturer’s 3-year warranty to five years. Coverage lasts five years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first) and is automatically transferable to a new owner at no extra cost during the duration of the warranty.
Additional benefits include:
- No deductible
- 24/7 roadside assistance
- Reimbursement of certain transportation costs associated with a breakdown
A GMC-certified technician will replace your vehicle’s parts with new or refurbished GMC parts.
GMC Protection Plans
GMC offers Silver and Platinum protection plans for extended, bumper-to-bumper coverage. The Silver plan states the components covered under warranty, including the powertrain, steering, electrical, brakes, and air conditioning. The Platinum plan is an exclusionary contract, which is the highest level of coverage.
Plans range from 24 months, 24,000 miles to 60 months, 60,000 miles.

Benefits of an Extended Warranty
Over time, your GMC will need repairs and replacements beyond the scope of your limited 3-year, 36,000-mile coverage. According to CarComplaints.com, common issues for GMC vehicles include transmission failure, which can cost over $3,000 to repair, as well as A/C failure, which can cost $1,100 on average. The cost of an extended warranty, which can be $1,000 to $1,500 from the manufacturer or less from CARCHEX, can often be hundreds to thousands of dollars less than the cost of repairs.
Consider getting an extended warranty in place to protect your GMC vehicle systems and parts before your original warranty expires.
