“Around Town” Segment Features 8 Ways to Winterize Your Car

Winter weather has officially arrived. While freezing temperatures and harsh road conditions have the potential to wreak havoc on cars and drivers this time of year, there are some measures consumers can take to keep their vehicles running smoothly. A few simple tips from a trusted expert can sometimes make all the difference in maintaining a hassle-free driving season.

Eight expert recommendations for ensuring vehicle safety and reliability during the winter months were the basis for a feature on CARCHEX, the industry-leading provider of extended auto warranties, on ABC’S The List. The nightly television newsmagazine zeroed in on the company’s dedication to keeping drivers safe and helping them get the most out of their cars as part of their focus on consumer issues and news trends.

Pat Goss, “America’s Trusted Mechanic” and CARCHEX spokesperson, compiled the list, which emphasizes checking the car battery for any corrosion and proper water levels, as well as checking the tires to ensure the tread is capable of dealing with ice and snow. Other key areas to pay close attention to include the car’s oil and filter, fluids, hoses and belts, brakes, lights—less daylight means more driving in darkness—and wiper blades, to clear the driver’s view of the road through any snow.

In case of a winter emergency on the road, CARCHEX representative Adam Curtis adds that, “The number one thing you should have is a fully charged cell phone.” An emergency kit may also come in handy. “Make sure you have some sort of heavy winter blanket to keep you warm. Make sure to have water to keep you hydrated and an energy bar or maybe some dried fruit so you’re able to have food last a few hours,” Curtis said.

The feature exemplifies the company’s mission to act as a consumer advocate to help protect consumers during the car buying process and ownership experience.
