Genesis is the parent company Hyundai’s upscale brand, and as with all expensive, luxury cars, the cost of repairs can tend to be on the higher side if your vehicle is not covered by a warranty or a protection plan.

Below, we take a close look at the Genesis warranty and your extended warranty options. See why buying an extended warranty for Genesis from CARCHEX might suit your needs best.

What Is the Genesis Warranty?

Every new Genesis vehicle comes with the following warranties:

  • Genesis New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Genesis Powertrain Limited Warranty
  • Genesis Anti-Perforation Limited Warranty
  • Federal Emission Control Warranty
  • California Emission Control Warranty (for vehicles sold in California)
  • Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty

Genesis New Vehicle Limited Warranty

This 5-year, 60,000-mile Genesis basic warranty covers the repair or replacement of any part manufactured or installed by Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Motor Company, or Genesis Motor America, including parts and labor, to fix defects in material or workmanship, excluding certain listed components.

If you have a new Genesis vehicle, here are a few things you need to know about the Genesis warranty.

  • The original car batteries are covered for up to 3 years/36,000 miles.
  • The radio, car navigation system, and Bluetooth are covered for the full 5 years/60,000 miles.
  • Paint repairs are covered for 3 years/36,000 miles. However, keep an eye out for any cosmetic imperfections to trim or paint at delivery because such concerns are covered for only 1 year/12,000 miles under the Genesis warranty.
  • You can claim the Genesis warranty for service adjustments due to manufacturing defects for up to 1 year/12,000 miles.
  • Air conditioner refrigerant charge is covered for up to 1 year/unlimited miles.
  • Normal maintenance services, routine wear and tear of any part, and damage due to accidents, theft, misuse, fire, and flood are excluded from the warranty. You can talk to your local dealer or read your Genesis Owner Handbook and Warranty document for a complete list of exclusions.
  • Tires will be covered by their original manufacturer.
  • All repairs have to be done at an authorized Genesis dealership or Genesis repair facility.

Genesis Powertrain Limited Warranty

The Genesis powertrain warranty covers the repair and/or replacement of powertrain components to fix manufacturing defects, excluding certain listed components and vehicles used for commercial purposes.

If you are the original owner of the Genesis vehicle, this warranty lasts 10 years/100,000 miles from purchase. Second owners will have coverage for the powertrain components for up to 5 years/60,000 miles under the Genesis New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Genesis Anti-Perforation Limited Warranty

This warranty covers any vehicle body sheet metal perforation due to corrosion caused by factory defects and under normal use for 7 years/unlimited miles.

Remember to keep all of the body repair records, as it may be necessary to prove that the required anti-corrosion materials have been applied to any previously repaired/replaced parts.

This warranty doesn’t cover:

  • Corrosion other than perforation
  • Corrosion of the exterior surface of the underbody panels
  • Corrosion due to accidents, improper maintenance, or misuse

Federal Emission Control Warranty

The Genesis Federal Emission Control Warranty protects against any defective factory emission-related components that would cause the vehicle to fail to meet federal regulations for 5 years/60,000 miles or first scheduled maintenance, whichever comes first.

Certain listed emission control parts are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles.

California Emission Control Warranty

This Genesis warranty is applicable to models certified for sale in California and will ensure your Genesis vehicle meets the state’s strict anti-smog standards.

While the Emission Control Performance Warranty will take care of any necessary vehicle repairs or adjustments to pass the smog check inspection for the first 5 years/60,000 miles, the Emission Control System Defect Warranty provides coverage for factory defects to specific components for up to 7 years/70,000 miles or 8 years/80,000 miles.

Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty

The Genesis Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty provides coverage for any genuine Genesis replacement part or accessory that was found to be defective in material or workmanship under normal use, excluding certain listed parts.

The warranty for replacement parts is valid for 1 year/12,000 miles from the date of installation and covers labor/parts charges for items sold and installed by an authorized Genesis retailer. If the part was not originally installed by a Genesis retailer, only the charge for parts will be covered.

A Genesis/Hyundai Genuine accessory installed by an authorized Genesis retailer in a new vehicle is covered by the accessory warranty for up to 1 year/unlimited miles from the date of purchase of a new Genesis vehicle.

Is the Genesis Warranty Transferable?

If you decide to sell your Genesis during the warranty period, these warranties can be transferred to the new owner for the remainder of the warranty period.

  • New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Anti-Perforation Warranty
  • Emissions Performance
  • Defect Warranty
  • Emission Control Systems Warranty
  • Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty

The powertrain warranty applies only to the original owner and is only partially transferred to subsequent owners.

Other Genesis Service Programs

While not strictly a warranty, all new Genesis vehicles come with the following benefits on purchase.

Genesis Roadside Assistance

The 5-year/unlimited-mile Genesis Roadside Assistance Program is available to the first owner of new Genesis vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. This benefit includes:

  • Towing to the nearest Genesis dealer or authorized repair center
  • Gas delivery (up to three gallons free of charge)
  • Lockout service
  • Flat tire change (except in cases where a Tire Mobility Kit is included instead of a spare tire)
  • Trip interruption benefits (up to $200 per day for a maximum of five days if your vehicle is disabled due to a covered mechanical defect more than 150 miles from home)

If the reason for the breakdown isn’t covered through the Genesis warranty, you will not be eligible for reimbursement. Also, the roadside assistance service has some notable exclusions. For example, it is not available for off-road conditions or conditions manifested as off-road, services for snow tires, or mounting and demounting of snow chains.

Genesis Complimentary Maintenance

All new 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Genesis vehicles come with complimentary scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles.

Genesis Service Valet

For the first 3 years/36,000 miles from your date of purchase, the original owner of the Genesis vehicle has access to the complimentary Genesis Service valet program, which includes a remote diagnostic check, free vehicle pick and return, and courtesy replacement vehicle during the repair.

Genesis CPO Limited Warranty

Did you buy a certified pre-owned (CPO) car from Genesis? In this case, you will get the following benefits, but note that the exact duration and terms may vary from dealer to dealer.

  • Genesis Certified Pre-owned Warranty—CPO Genesis cars come with a limited CPO warranty of up to 6 years/75,000 miles.
  • Genesis Powertrain Warranty—This warranty is transferred from the original owner for up to 10 years/100,000 miles from the original sale.
  • Genesis Certified Pre-Owned Roadside Assistance—CPO Genesis cars come with roadside assistance.
  • Genesis CPO Travel Reimbursement—This perk offers up to $500 for trip interruption services and $50/day up to $500 for rental car reimbursement.

Why Do You Need an Extended Warranty?

According to RepairPal, Genesis vehicles score a 3.5 out of 5 in reliability, placing 7 out of 30 vehicles in its category. Also, Genesis vehicle owners spend an average of $565 on repairs and maintenance, taking their car for unscheduled repairs 0.6 times a year with a 14% chance that the repair could be severe.

Common Genesis Repairs and Associated Costs

  • Crankshaft position sensor replacement ($101 to $142)
  • AC condenser replacement ($476 to $778)
  • Whining noise from the power steering pump ($2,143 to $2,167)
  • Heater core placement ($730 to $857)

As you can see from these RepairPal costs, while Genesis vehicles are rated above average, repair bills can still quickly add up if your factory warranty has expired. This is where an extended warranty comes into play.

An extended warranty protects your car and budget from the dangers of unexpected, costly repairs that affect your car as it ages. When your car is protected, you’ll be able to drive it for a longer time without worry. In addition, a transferable extended warranty can increase your car value if you plan on selling it soon.

Genesis Extended Warranty

If you would like to explore your options for Genesis extended warranties from the dealer, they have a vehicle protection plan that can add to the original limited factory warranty.

The Genesis Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) offers enhanced coverage during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and an extension of the warranty period. That means you’re covered for a total of up to 10 years (not an additional 10 years).

Under the Genesis extended warranty, you will have to pay a deductible for covered repairs, depending on what you selected at the time of purchase.

If you decide to buy this vehicle service contract, here are a few things you can expect:

  • Coverage for more than 1,500 components
  • Enhanced roadside assistance
  • Rental car reimbursement (up to $35 per day for up to 10 days if the repair is due to a covered mechanical breakdown)
  • Ability to roll the monthly payments into your auto loan

As with the original warranty, all repairs under the Genesis extended warranty can be performed at participating dealers in the country. However, this can restrict your choices if you have to drive a couple of hours to reach the nearest repair center.

Also, the service contract does not cover mechanical breakdowns caused by accidental damage, collision, weather, improper maintenance, or even pre-existing conditions, which means that you will have to pay out of your pocket for these repairs.
