What does a powertrain warranty cover? It covers the most important parts in your car - the engine, the transmission, and the drivetrain. Almost all new cars are covered by a powertrain warranty for a limited period of time. But what if you own a used car, or what if your powertrain warranty has expired? You may need an extended warranty to stay covered. Read on for more information.
Powertrain Warranty Explained
What is a powertrain warranty, and what does it cover? A powertrain warranty is a vehicle service plan that covers the powertrain portion of your car.
Let’s back up for a second: the powertrain is literally the part of the car that makes the car go. While that may sound like a sufficient level of coverage, it doesn't account for things like your brakes, electrical systems, air systems, tires, or the interior. These components are covered typically by a basic limited warranty, or what is more commonly known as a bumper-to-bumper warranty.
The powertrain includes the engine, the transmission, and the drivetrain. If any part within that team of parts falters or malfunctions, the car doesn’t move.
That’s a big deal.
Because it’s a big deal, repairing any of those elements is an expensive prospect. As such, manufacturer’s have been offering insurance, called powertrain warranties, as a standard enticement to new buyers for years. For the most part, powertrain warranties for new vehicles last for the first five years or 60,000 miles of the car's lifetime.
They’re popular, to the extent that new car buyers expect to receive a powertrain warranty. However, they don't last forever, and powertrain warranties are not always transferable to subsequent owners of a car.
Powertrain Warranty Language Lesson
As with all contracts, the language used in the powertrain warranty makes all the difference as to what a powertrain warranty covers and what it does not. Pay attention to the words; they matter. Here are some examples:
Long Block vs. Short Block: A “long block” engine will require additional external parts installed to run—like heads, camshaft and valve train, head covers, water pump, oil pump, oil pa, etc. A “short block” engine is simple a block with crankshaft, rods, and pistons. That’s a huge difference when someone tells you need a new water pump and your warranty only covers “short block” engine parts.
Manual vs. Automatic: The manual transmission requires a gear shift and clutch to change gears. An automatic does all of that automatically. Each type requires different parts installed and different parts to work in concert to make the car properly function. Powertrain warranties may not cover the clutch on a manual transmission.
You can answer the question, "What does the powertrain warranty cover?" by reading the contract very carefully.
What Can You Do When Your Powertrain Warranty Expires?
That’s where the powertrain extended warranty comes in. Drivers who want to keep their vehicles safe on the road for as long as possible often choose to protect their investment with an extended warranty. Also, because many powertrain warranties aren't transferable, and because it's hard to know 100 percent of any car’s maintenance and accident history, used car owners often have to decide whether to buy extended coverage for their powertrain. Purchasing one will add more years and mileage to cover those critical repairs.
Many third-party providers offer powertrain warranties as well as bumper-to-bumper warranties that extend well beyond the life of your factory warranty. Get long-lasting coverage and secure peace of mind knowing that your car's most expensive parts are covered for years to come.
